In 1994, the Cities of Sherburn and Welcome began sharing their resources through a joint agreement. At the time, each city maintained their own full-time officer and shared the cost of an additional full-time officer. This increased the number of hours that were covered from eight hours a day to approximately 20 hours per day.
On January 1, 1999, the Sherburn/Welcome Police Department was formed through a joint powers agreement that was signed by each city. This agreement established a separate police department that was governed by the Police Commission of Sherburn and Welcome. At the time, SWPD was one of the only joint departments in the State of Minnesota and the only department that had a signed joint powers agreement establishing a separate department. Since 1999, several other joint departments have been formed in the state as other municipalities are seeing the benefits of sharing their resources.
The department currently employs four full-time officers and currently has two part-time officers. The department has an officer on duty twenty hours a day with remaining four hours covered by an on-call officer.
The department’s mission statement is:
THE SHERBURN\WELCOME POLICE DEPARTMENT IS COMMITTED TO PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL, FAIR COMPASSIONATE AND COMMUNITY ORIENTED POLICE SERVICES THAT ARE SENSITIVE TO THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY TO ENSURE THE PUBLIC’S SAFETY.
It is the belief of this department that law enforcement is only as effective as its relationships with the community. We also believe in providing law enforcement that the community as a whole appreciates. Building good working relationships with the citizens of the communities is one of our top priorities in the department.
The department always welcomes input from the citizens on services that they would like to see provided by the department. Feel free to e-mail any officer or send general tips, information or comments. Department e-mail addresses are listed on the CONTACT page of this web-site.
